The year 1970 featured two of cinema’s absolutely essential rock docs. Yin to “Gimme Shelter’s” yang, “Woodstock” — which won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar — chronicles the epic 1969 Woodstock Festival, billed as “An Aquarian Exposition: 3 Days of Peace & Music.” Performers include Jimi Hendrix, the Who, Crosby, Stills & Nash, and Santana. Among the film’s seven cutters were a young Martin Scorsese and his longtime collaborator Thelma Schoonmaker, who supervised the Oscar-nominated editing team.
